The awkwardly shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room mate, Neil, who is exceedingly bright and popular, is very much under the thumb of his dominating  father.

The two, along with other friends, meet Professor Keating, who is their new English teacher. He is an unconventional New England prep-school teacher who inspires his students with poetry and encourages them to embrace life.

Keating tells them of the Dead Poets Society, an old literary club in which he had been a member, and he encourages them to go against the status quo. Each, in their own way, does this, and are dramatically changed for life.
